A few tips will help you get the best result:
Make sure the shoes are clean and completely dry.
Test the spray on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn't change the color or texture.
Spray light, even coats from about 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) away rather than soaking the fabric.
Let the shoes dry completely (often 24 hours, depending on the product) before wearing them.
Reapply every few months or after cleaning the shoes.
A couple of things to keep in mind:
Waterproof sprays help repel water—they won't make knit shoes fully waterproof or suitable for heavy rain or standing water.
Avoid getting the spray on the rubber outsole, as it can make it slippery until it wears off.
If your shoes have leather or suede trim, choose a protector that's safe for those materials as well.
