If your mother-in-law wears a rigid plastic AFO, I'd be cautious about ordering the same size and regular width in the Mt. Emey 9205 Women's Orthopedic Mary Jane by Apis.
In general, I'd recommend:
Start with size 8 Wide if her Billy or Friendly shoes in size 8 fit well with the AFO but aren't especially roomy.
Consider size 8½ Wide if her AFO is bulky, she typically removes the insole from her shoes to make them fit, or her current shoes are a snug fit over the brace.
The Mt. Emey 9205 is designed to accommodate orthotics and braces, with features like:
Extra depth.
A wide-opening hook-and-loop closure.
Removable insoles to create additional space.
Wide and extra-wide width options.
Because of those features, many AFO users do not need to size up as much as they do in standard shoes. Often, choosing a wider width is more helpful than increasing the length.
Since this is a surprise and you can't measure her foot, size 8 Wide is probably the safest choice if:
She wears size 8 Billy or Friendly shoes with the AFO, and
Those shoes fit comfortably.
